Just one alcoholic drink a day could shorten your life, study says
For every 12.5 units of alcohol people drank a week it raised the risk of:
Drinking alcohol was linked with a lower risk of non-fatal heart disease,
but scientists said this benefit was “swamped” by the increased risk of other forms of heart disease.
“Although non-fatal heart attacks are less likely in people who drink, this benefit is swamped by
the increased risk of other forms of heart disease including fatal heart attacks and stroke.”
Dr Angela Wood, from the University of Cambridge, lead author of the study said: “The key message of this research is that, if you already drink alcohol, drinking less may help you live longer
and lower your risk of several cardiovascular conditions.”
University was that This study makes clear that on balance there are no health benefits
from drinking alcohol, which is usually the case when things sound too good to be true,
Authors said the study backed up the UK’s recently lowered guidelines, which since 2016 recommend both men
and women should not drink more than 14 units of alcohol each week, the equivalent of about six drinks a week.
But Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, which partly
funded the study, said this did not mean the UK “should rest on its laurels”.

Former Vice President Joe Biden talked with Stephen Colbert on Monday night, and, in regard to sitting president’s term, said, “I think it will, God willing, go down as the single exception in American history.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden appeared on CBS’ ‘Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ on Monday night, and, naturally, the topics of politics and President Trump came up.
In regard to the sitting president’s term, Biden told Colbert, “I think it will, God willing, go down as the single exception in American history.”
Biden also noted that while members of the outgoing administration generally give a new leader time to settle in before making them the subject of public comments and criticism, “There are certain things that, when they occur, you just can’t remain silent.”
“Charlottesville, for me, was a moment where I thought silence would be complicity,” he continued. “To not have an outright, flat condemnation of that…I thought the silence was deafening.”
In the wake of the August violence that saw rally participants including white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and other such groups and sympathizers clash with counter-protesters, taking the life of one, President Trump attributed the melee and its outcomes to “both sides.”
Early in November, Biden, at a Philadelphia event hosted by Axios, specifically touched upon the effect president’s reactions to events like Charlottesville is having on the nation.
He said that Trump’s divisive rhetoric is, “eating at the fabric at this country,” and has eroded the nation’s sense of civility. “You can disagree on issues but this has gotten so, sort of, coarse, so vile, so demeaning,” the former vice president noted. “And our children our listening.”
“This penchant for self-aggrandizement and this penchant for tweeting, this penchant to focus so specifically and eternally on what he does or doesn’t do, even if he was right about everything, is sending a message to all of you and sending a message to your younger siblings that is just totally inappropriate,” Biden said of Trump’s behavior at a mid-October event.

A nun has been found guilty of drinking and driving. Witnesses say they watched Sister Kimberly Miller driving erratically last year in the Philadelphia area and crashed her car into a business. Police arrested the nun after failing a sobriety test. Attorneys defending Miller say the nun was driving in her sleep after taking Ambien with a glass of wine at bed time. She said she suffers from sleepwalking and has no memory of the incident.

An Australian coroner says police failed to act quickly enough in a Sydney cafe siege in 2014 that left three people dead.

Gunman Man Haron Monis held hostages for 16 hours before opening fire inside the cafe with a warning shot.

The New South Wales State Coroner, Michael Barnes, said:
“I conclude that after a brief period to allow officers to gather relevant information, an emergency action ought to have been initiated following Monis’ first shot at 2:03 am.

“The ten minutes that elapsed without decisive action by police was too long.

“Tori Johnson was executed in the meantime, before police had made a decision about whether to enter the cafe.”

Tori Johnson, the manager of the cafe, was among 18 hostages.

Lawyer Katrina Dawson was killed by fragments of a bullet fired by police.

Officers shot and killed the gunman, who had reportedly sworn allegiance to ISIL not long before his attack.
