Major controversy has erupted over Mamata Banerjee’s decision to gift Rs 28 Crore to Durga Puja Organisers and on the other hand not increase the renumeration to Imams. Influential clerics and scholars across the state are taking out a rally demanding hike in stipend to Imams and state funds for least 10,000 Madrasas across the state. A section of Muslim clerics have claimed that for the last 6 years, Imams are getting a stipend of only Rs 2, 500 per month.

An 84-year-old rabbi was among six people reportedl arrested during a protest against Immigration and Custom Enforcement in Philadelphia on Friday, June 29.

Video from Councilwoman Helen Gym shows the moment Rabbi Arthur Waskow was gently placed in handcuffs, helped from a seat and then lead to a police van. He and five others were issued citations for failure to disperse and were later released, Philly.com reported. They were accused of blocking the door to an ICE facility.

This wasn’t the first arrest for Waskow, who founded the Jewish Renewal movement and has been a political activist since the 1960s. A report from Israeli newspaper Haaretz said that this latest incident was the 25th time he was arrested at a demonstration. Credit: Helen Gym via Storyful

A string of grocery stores in Chicago shut their doors. Immigrants around the U.S. stayed home from work and school Thursday to demonstrate how important they are to America’s economy and its way of life, and many businesses closed in solidarity.
