Former GPD Officer and convicted killer Mark Torre Jr. was sentenced to eight years in prison but has yet to serve a single day behind bars. That’s because of his pending appeal which is now under advisement by Supreme Court Justices.

Prisoner John Steckley looks like he might have been mouthing off as he walked out of the visitors’ room at Philadelphia’s Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, but he appeared to be posing no physical threat to the guard standing at the door. Even so, the corrections officer coldcocked Steckley in the face and then, along with another guard, proceeded to beat him.

A prison security camera video obtained by City Paper shows Steckley’s hands were relaxed at his side when corrections officer Tyrone Glover slammed his fist into the left side of the inmate’s face. Then, after Steckley hit the ground, Glover and another officer struck him multiple times, including several blows to his torso. Steckley tried to defend himself, including attempting to throw at least one punch of his own, in the Jan. 9 incident. The video does not include audio, so it is impossible to know what words Steckley and Glover exchanged before the first punch.

Steckley isn’t the first inmate that Glover appears to have beaten this year. In September, City Paper reported that multiple visitors from city social-service agencies say they watched in horror as a guard severely beat inmate Marcellus Temple in the Curran-Fromhold gym on Sept. 25.

Last week, Philadelphia Prison System spokesperson Shawn Hawes confirmed that Glover was the guard involved in both incidents at the city-run facility on State Road. She says the prison had investigated both incidents, but declined to provide any information about the findings, or say whether Glover was subject to any discipline.

“Both investigations are complete,” Hawes wrote in an email. “I have nothing additional to add regarding the officer’s history.”

Inmate Steckley has been charged with assault on a corrections officer.

A filmer captured a Philadelphia police officer striking at a protester with a baton during a rally against family separations on June 19.

Hundreds of people protesting against family separations gathered outside the Rittenhouse Hotel where Vice President Mike Pence was speaking, according to news reports.

“The incident occurred at a peaceful protest during which Americans gathered to protest family separations at the border and in detention centers,” the filmer Daisy Confoy said. “Police officers became violent when protesters linked arms to prevent an unmarked security car from moving through the middle of the crowd.”

“In the video, one police officer is seen repeatedly beating a protester, who is out of the frame but clearly on the ground, with his baton,” Confoy said.

The video was taken near Rittenhouse Square at 19th and Walnut at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Philadelphia police released the 9-1-1 call and officer transmissions related to an incident with the arrest of two black men at a Starbucks on April 12 that has drawn national attention.

A viral video showed two men being arrested after the store’s manager called police as they were sitting waiting for a third man without ordering anything. The store has been the scene of protests since the video surfaced.

The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations is examining reports of other incidents at the same Starbucks, a news report said. City officials did not provide details about the reports they are examining from the specific store.

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson visited Philadelphia and met privately with the two men to personally apologize during a meeting on Monday, a report said. The company will close more than 8,000 store in the US next month for “racial-bias education” training. Credit: Philadelphia Police Department via Storyful

A man who shot and wounded a policeman at point blank range as he sat in his patrol car was inspired by Islamic State militants, police said.
Edward Archer, using a stolen gun, fired at least 11 shots at Jesse Hartnett in Philadelphia.
Despite being shot, Mr Hartnett left his vehicle and was able to return fire, striking the gunman three times.
Mr Archer was arrested within minutes and later confessed to police he did it for Islam, officers told reporters.
“He has confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam,” Police Commissioner Richard Ross said, because he believes “police defend laws that are contrary to Islam”.
The 30-year-old from Yeadon, Pennsylvania, told police he pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
But there is no evidence that he was working with anyone else, Mr Ross said.
