visit here sparks the senses. As soon as you arrive, the intoxicating fragrance of incense and clove oil hangs in the thick tropical air. Peanuts sizzle at roadside stalls, petal-strewn offerings smolder on busy sidewalks, and traditional gamelan music jangles against the buzz of mopeds. Despite the clamor and chaos of the main tourist areas, the island is rich in natural beauty, with attractions for every kind of traveler. Surfers come for the legendary swells, hikers can trek up jungly volcanic peaks and to misty waterfalls, and cyclists can bike through lush landscapes bristling with rice terraces and traditional villages.
1 Pura Tanah Lot
About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot (“Pura” means temple in Balinese) is one of Bali’s most iconic temples thanks to its spectacular seaside setting on a rocky islet surrounded by crashing waves. For the Balinese people, it is one of the most sacred of all the island’s sea temples. (The largest and holiest Hindu temple in Bali is Pura Besakih, but recently local hagglers have been harassing visitors.) Every evening, throngs of tourists from Kuta, Legian, and Sanur find their way through a labyrinth of lanes lined by souvenir sellers to watch the sun setting behind the temple.
2 Mount Batur
Every day in Bali’s predawn darkness, hundreds of visitors begin the trek up the 1,700-meter summit of Mount Batur to watch the sun rise above the lush mosaic of mist-shrouded mountains and the caldera far below. This sacred active volcano lies in Kintamani District in Bali’s central highlands, about an hour’s drive from Ubud, and the hike to the summit to watch the sunrise has long graced the list of top things to do in Bali.
3 Uluwatu Temple
Presiding over plunging sea cliffs above one of Bali’s best surf spots, Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of the island’s most famous temples, thanks to its magnificent clifftop setting. In Balinese, “Ulu” means “tip” or “land’s end” and “Watu” means rock, a fitting name for the location of the temple on the Bukit Peninsula along the island’s southwestern tip. Like Pura Tanah Lot, sunset is the best time to visit, when the sky and sea glow in the late afternoon light.
7 Waterbom Bali
Waterbom Bali is an action-packed waterpark, in the heart of Kuta, with something for every member of the family. Kids can splash in the swimming pools; drift down the Lazy River; or zoom down one of the many twisting water slides and rides, with names like the Python, Green Viper, and Super Bowl. Moms and dads can relax with a reflexology session, manicure or pedicure, or fish spa therapy. Restaurants and cafes cater to a range of different diets, and the grounds are landscaped with large, shady trees and beautiful tropical gardens, making this a refreshing respite from the heat on a hot tropical day.

For decades, there wasn’t a coffee shop anywhere in Indonesia’s Toraja region, even though its high-quality beans grabbed top dollar on the international market. But now Toraja is experiencing a mini-explosion in coffee shops, with dozens sprouting up in the region.

When it comes to islands worth visiting in Southeast Asia, few can compete with the allure of Bali; however, if youre expecting a Utopian pristine paradise, as often is depicted in the s and popular culture, youll be in for a rude awakening. Bali is what it is — unicorns and warts alike. Although there is stunning scenery, world class beaches and enchanting Hindu temples to explore there is also eyesore rubbish piles, filthy beaches and unscrupulous touts to content with.\r

Welcome to Bali, Indonesia!\r
\r
After spending nearly a year travelling in Southeast Asia, we couldnt leave without first visiting Bali. We decided to take a 2 week trip to the famed island and split our time between Ubud and Sanur to explore as much as possible.\r
\r
During one of our first nights on the island, we attended a Balinese fire and trance performance. This dance and music drama originated in the 1930s, depicting stories from Hindu literature.\r
\r
Ubud is the art and cultural capital of Bali and we enjoyed spending a few days here. Our mornings in the town were spent visiting the various temples, browsing through markets, and soaking in the surroundings. \r
\r
We also had a chance to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. They were lush, green, and reminded us of our time in Korea because Sams apartment overlooked rice terraces.\r
\r
Bali is mainly Hindu and the island is home to many temples. During our time in Bali we visited the Elephant Temple, which is best known for its menacing cave entrance. \r
\r
We also visited Gunung Kawi, which is nicknamed the Rock Temple. The rock temple gets its name because of the 10 shrines that were carved into the rock wall and stand 7 meters tall. They are truly a sight to behold.\r
\r
Well, I am supposed to sprinkle water on my head, so here we go.\r
\r
During our tour around the island, we stopped at a lookout point where we saw the impressive Mount Batur looming in the horizon. Mount Batur is an ive volcano, however, when we learned that it was open to hikers, we decided we were up for the challenge.\r
\r
Bali is a great jump off point for exploring some of the surrounding beaches and islands. Trips to Lombok, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili Islands are very easy to arrange. There are plenty of water sports to choose from including snorkeling, free diving, scuba diving, surfing and even kayaking. \r
\r
Ubud is home to the monkey forest where infamous little macaques roam freely. The monkey forest is home to over 600 monkeys, who over time have lost all fear of man. The monkeys are not shy and will approach people and even climb onto their bodies if they believe you have food. If youre feeling adventurous and would like to feed the monkeys, you can purchase bananas right at the entrance of the monkey forest. \r
\r
One of the highlights of our time in Bali, was climbing Mount Batur for sunrise. The morning of the hike, we got up at 2 in the morning and were driven to the base of the volcano.\r
\r
Overall, we really enjoyed our time in Bali! It may not have been the quiet paradise thats depicted in the s, but it offered culture, natural beauty, and it was a great place to relax.\r
