Hiring over the past five months has been the strongest since the late 1990s tech boom as the economy added 288,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent from 6.3 percent.
The Labor Department says those gains follow additions of 217,000 jobs in May and 304,000 in April, figures that were both revised upward.
The economy has added more than 200,000 jobs in each of the past five months, a streak it last matched during the 1999-2000 tech boom.

U.S. employment growth slowed more than expected in August, as employers added 151,000 jobs,  after two straight months of robust gains and wage gains moderated, which could effectively rule out an interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve this month.

The U.S. unemployment rate fell to a seven-year low in August as employers added a modest 173,000 jobs, a key piece of evidence for the Federal Reserve in deciding whether to raise interest rates from record lows later this month. The Labor Department said Friday that the jobless rate fell to 5.1 percent — a level consistent with a normal economy and the lowest since April 2008 — from 5.3 percent in July. Though hiring in August was the slowest in five months, the government revised up job growth for June and July by a combined 44,000. From June through August, the economy added a robust 221,000 jobs a month, up from an average of 189,000 from March through May.

The latest jobs report shows employers added 263,000 jobs in April. The unemployment rate fell to the lowest rate in half a century. Mola Lenghi reports.
