His ‘new’ guide book, published over a hundred years ago, unlocks Britain’s railways at their zenith, when some 20,000 miles of track reached into every corner of the country. Michael navigates a vibrant and optimistic Britain, at the height of its power and influence in the world, but a nation wrestling with political, social and industrial unrest at home.

Part 12: York to Frizinghall
Armed with his Edwardian Bradshaw’s guide, Michael Portillo conducts important research in an historic tea room, built by an Edwardian immigrant to the city of York. Research of a more sombre kind leads Michael to the roots of our modern welfare state in the work of an early 20th-century Quaker investigator, whose family manufactured chocolate.

Next stop is Leeds, where Michael discovers the city’s textile heritage, which relied in Edwardian times on a group of skilled Jewish immigrants to take it forward. Michael learns how some of the big names built their empires in Leeds and measures up to a footballing legend. At Bradford Grammar School, Michael hears the story of a talented Edwardian student who became a famous composer and enjoys one of his works, sung by a music pupil of today.

International Arabian belly dancer Soraya, who is based along the coastline in southern New Jersey, performs a Middle Eastern raks baladi performance for a beautiful Moroccan and Egyptian wedding client and their guests at a hotel on the Main Line of the suburb of Philadelphia, PA. Thanks again to my friend Bramuel for connecting us and taking us to a Maasai people village deep in the heart of Kajiado. We set off from Nairobi and it was about a 2 hour drive to get there. On the way, we stopped for a few samosas, which were incredibly delicious, and then continues onto a dirt road to get deep into Maasailand.

Maasai – The Maasai are a people group in Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania. They are known for being nomadic herders, and follow the pasture as they are tend to livestock – mostly cows and goats.

One of the honors of Maasai culture is a whole goat roast, and it was a privilege to have the opportunity to see the entire process from start to finish. We arrived to the village and they got straight to work, slaughtering the goat traditional style, and sectioning it off. About 10 minutes after the goat was slaughtered the leader reached into the carcass and sliced out the raw kidney, and immediately handed me a slice, with a smile.

It was an honor to have this opportunity, to eat, and fellowship with this Maasai community in rural Kenya. It was a learning experience, and truly one of the top memories I’ve ever had.
