This week, I find a great honest to God sauce on top square pizza place right in my back yard.
I’ve been here before for a cheesesteak, but I didn’t know just what I was missing not ordering their signature square pizza.
A couple of Yelp reviewers were down on it because it wasn’t L&B’s in NYC. I get that, but a round trip to L&B’s for me is at least 6 hours, so I’m perfectly content with a 5-10 minute bus ride to get some pretty freakin” amazing square pizza.

“It all started in 1959 with the drive and love of Old World Tradition of the late Joseph N. Santucci and his wife Philomena. Remembering the many renowned local Italian bakery shops that lined the streets of Philadelphia in the 1950s serving a legendary square dough creation that was topped with a homemade tomato gravy, Joe Santucci had a revolutionary idea. He would soon transform this neighborhood specialty into something uniquely his own.
Using an old family recipe and the influence of his immigrant roots, Joe turned the pizza business in Philadelphia upside down by introducing a new pizza made the real Italian way – cheese on the bottom and sauce on top. To stand apart from local pizzerias, Joe added high-quality ingredients, unique baking techniques, and a distinctive square shape just like the old local bakeries. It was an immediate sensation!
Today, Joe Santucci’s oldest son Joseph carries on this 50 year old tradition. Dedicated to the same standard of excellence, Joe Santucci still uses his father’s original pizza recipe”
