Curfew to stay in place in Baltimore as protests continue over the death of Freddie Gray

Authorities in the US city of Baltimore say a curfew will stay in place over the weekend as protests continue over the death of Freddie Gray, who died of spinal injuries received in police custody.

Although Thursday was relatively quiet people were still on the streets in some cities including Philadelphia where scuffles broke out with police.

“We have residents and business people who are saying can we take the curfew away?” said Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts. “Things are settled. Can you kind of retract some of the curfew ordinance? I would say this – although we’ve had two days of peace and quiet we still have a weekend to make it through. I ask for your patience, I ask for your understanding as we move through.”

Baltimore police say nearly a hundred officers have been hurt since riots erupted earlier this week.

A police report on African-American Freddie Gray’s death has been handed over to the city’s chief prosecutor who will decide whether to bring charge
