Emotions running high across US after court’s refusal to indict cop

In the US, anger continues to boil over a court’s refusal to indict a white police officer for the killing of an unarmed Black teenager in Missouri. In New York, a massive demonstration has been held at Times Square to demand justice for Michael Brown.

Emotions are running high across the country over a grand jury’s decision in one of the United States’ most racially charged cases in recent years. People have held demonstrations in dozens of cities, including Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis. Earlier, people once again hit the streets of St. Louis County, hours after angry protesters set properties on fire. Videos of the aftermath of the protests show massive destruction of buildings and cars, with stores and businesses looted. The violence broke out despite a plea for calm from President Barack Obama. The Saint Louis police chief says at least 18 people were injured and over 80 people arrested on Monday night. The governor of Missouri has called for the deployment of more National Guard troops to Ferguson. Meanwhile, the family of slain African American teenager Michael Brown has objected to the grand jury’s decision.
